Rachel our Deputy Communications and Engagement Manager held a Free Community Lunch in Lindfield, West Sussex, on the 26th June for 27 Older residents seeking social connection.
On one of the hottest days of the year Rachel was supported by Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove (AUKWSBH) and the Royal Voluntary Service, to host a free community lunch at the King Edward Hall to help older residents in Lindfield connect and reduce social isolation.
Despite the high temperatures, the event saw a strong turnout, with 27 residents coming together to enjoy a hot meal. Guests were offered a choice of steak and mushroom pie or cauliflower cheese, both served with sauté potatoes, carrots and peas, or chicken korma. Desserts included traditional bread and butter pudding with custard or a chocolate mousse, providing a welcome treat for attendees.
Attendees also enjoyed live entertainment from “The Weald Ukulele Players and singers”, who kindly
volunteered their time to bring joy through music. Guests enjoyed listening to classic songs and joining in with a good old sing-along.
Funded through a grant from the Mid Sussex District Council LCN group, the event provided a warm and welcoming space for residents to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal while building social connections. Attendees were encouraged to meet new people, reconnect with friends and develop relationships that could continue to grow past the event.
Rachel said:
“We wanted to create a safe and welcoming space where people could come together, socialise and feel part of their community. The aim was to help reduce social isolation and give attendees the chance to form connections that last beyond the event.
We were delighted to be supported by Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and the Royal Voluntary Service, who not only helped the day run smoothly but also shared valuable information about their services, helping residents access support at home and stay connected.”
Guests shared their feedback:
“The lunch was very nice, and I enjoyed meeting other people. Everyone was very kind and welcoming.”
“I enjoyed meeting people, the food and the entertainment.”
“I loved the social aspect, the friendliness of everyone and not having to cook and wash up!”
For one lady who rarely gets out, the event was especially meaningful. It was her first proper meal in years, as she usually relies on microwave meals. She shared that it was a lovely treat for her and that she had a wonderful time.
As part of the event, attendees received gift bags containing information from local services including the PAT team, the Fire Service and West Sussex County Council, offering further support to help them remain safe and independent at home.
The event demonstrated the powerful role that community initiatives can play in tackling loneliness, with strong feedback emphasising the value of creating welcoming spaces where people feel connected and supported.
We would like to thank local volunteer Zoe for all her hard work on the day too. Due to the popularity of the event, we are looking to host another lunch later in the year.
