Why is exercise important as we age?

Staying active and eating well are key to ageing well. As we get older, regular exercise helps to maintain strength, balance, and mobility, reducing the risk of falls and long‑term health conditions. Good nutrition supports muscle strength, bone health, energy levels, and overall wellbeing, helping people stay independent for longer.

Our Move More, Eat Well service brings together personalised exercise support and practical nutrition guidance for older people living in St Albans and district. The service is designed to support healthy ageing, improve confidence, and promote long‑term wellbeing.

We understand that starting exercise or making changes to eating habits can feel challenging. That’s why we provide one‑to‑one, tailored support, shaped around each person’s physical ability, health needs, goals, and lifestyle. Support is delivered at a comfortable pace, with simple, achievable steps that fit into everyday life.

This joined‑up approach helps people to:

  • Improve strength, balance, and mobility
  • Increase energy and confidence
  • Support healthy weight and nutrition
  • Manage long‑term health conditions
  • Stay active, independent, and well at home

Meet the team

Hi, My name is Yvonne and I’m the Active Ageing and Nutrition Service Lead at HILS, I’ve been part of the organisation for over 12 years. I joined the Active Ageing team in 2018 as an exercise instructor, working closely with clients to support their strength, balance, and overall wellbeing.
I’m qualified in chair-based exercise, Otago strength and balance and Level 2 understanding Nutrition and Health. I really value the opportunity to help people build their confidence, improve their independence and feel better in themselves.
After two years of leading the Active Ageing team, I’ve recently moved into my current role, where I now oversee both Active Ageing and Nutrition services. I really enjoy supporting the team and making sure we are delivering the best possible service for our clients.
I’m especially excited about the launch of the Move More, Eat Well programme, as it brings together everything I’m passionate about. It’s a great opportunity to support people in a more joined-up way, helping them stay active, eat well, and continue to live healthy, happy and independent lives.
What I love most about my role is supporting and developing my team to deliver meaningful, high-quality support and seeing the impact that has on the people we work with every day.

cat profile

Hello I’m Cat I’m an exercise and nutrition practitioner. I’m passionate about helping people build healthy habits, stay active and continue doing the things they enjoy for as long as possible. I love supporting people to achieve things they may not have thought they could, and helping them find their own reasons to move more and eat well. I come from a professional powerlifting background and have a level 3 in fitness instructing and personal training, alongside qualifications in strength and balance, chair exercise and applying principles of nutrition to physical activity programmes. Over the past 8 months or so working for HILS I’ve especially enjoyed working with older adults to improve their confidence, independence, and ability to stay active in everyday life.

Hi my name is Zak and I have a strong background in nutrition, exercise and health supported by extensive education and practical experience.

I have completed a BSc in sport and exercise science, followed by a post graduate diploma in sports nutrition through the International Olympic committee and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition.

In terms of practical experience, I have worked with a wide range of clients from elite athletes to special population groups utilising evidence-based nutrition and exercise strategies to improve overall functionality and health, whether the goal is to sprint 100m under 10 seconds or simply walk up the stairs.

I have recently joined the HILS team to support the ‘Eat Well Move More’ programme and I can say that it will be a pleasure to offer my services to help improve the quality of life among the deserving people of St Albans.
