HILS Wellbeing Client of the Season: Roger’s Journey of Determination and Progress

At HILS, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of our clients, and Roger’s journey through our Active Ageing programme is a shining example of what can be achieved with the right support, mindset, and determination.

From the very start, Roger stood out for his positive attitude, commitment, and willingness to engage. Over the course of his eight sessions, he demonstrated exactly how a proactive approach to health and wellbeing can lead to meaningful change.

A Positive Mindset That Makes a Difference

Roger shared that he had once been told he may not reach his 90th birthday. Rather than letting this define him, he chose a different path – one built on optimism, resilience, and taking control of his health. This mindset became the foundation for everything he achieved during the programme.

Real, Measurable Progress

Throughout his time with us, Roger made clear and measurable improvements. His Berg Balance Scale score (a recognised scale used to measure balance and track progress) increased from 48 to 53, highlighting a significant enhancement in his balance and stability.

In addition to this, Roger:

  • Improved his walking ability, increasing both confidence and distance
  • Gained the strength and confidence to climb stairs independently
  • Reported feeling “a big improvement” in his overall physical ability

These outcomes reflect the impact of structured, tailored physical activity as part of an Active Ageing approach.

Building Confidence Through Learning

What truly stood out was Roger’s approach to learning. He took the time to:

  • Understand each exercise fully
  • Focus on correct technique and safety
  • Ask questions and stay engaged throughout

By the end of the eight sessions, Roger had developed the confidence and independence to continue his exercises on his own which is a key goal of the programme.

He also committed to walking every day, gradually increasing the distance he could manage, further embedding healthy habits into his daily routine.

The Power of Teamwork and Support

Roger highlighted that one of the reasons the programme worked so well was the sense of teamwork with his Active Ageing instructor Cat:

“We got on and worked as a team.”

This supportive and collaborative relationship helped create an environment where Roger felt motivated, encouraged, and consistent, all crucial factors in achieving lasting results.

A Story That Inspires

Roger’s journey is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to improving health and wellbeing. With the right mindset and support, it’s possible to build strength, increase independence, and feel more confident in everyday life.

We’re incredibly proud of everything Roger has accomplished and delighted to have been part of his journey and award him our Spring Client of the Season Award.
