Meeting Loneliness Together: How HILS Helps Tackle Loneliness in Later Life
Loneliness Awareness Week recently came to a close, but at HILS, supporting people who feel isolated is something we do every single day.
This year’s theme, “Reducing stigma” through “Meeting loneliness together”, encouraged us all to talk more openly about loneliness – and challenge the idea that it only affects certain people or looks a certain way.
At HILS, we know that loneliness in later life can be invisible. It might look like days without conversation, or mealtimes spent alone. That’s why we’re committed to offering not just practical support, but meaningful human connection for older and vulnerable people across Hampshire, Hertfordshire, and West Sussex.
How we help reduce loneliness across Hampshire, Hertfordshire, and West Sussex
Meals on wheels – Our meals on wheels service is about so much more than food. Every hot, nutritious meal we deliver comes with a friendly face and a wellbeing check, helping people feel safer and more connected in their own homes. For many clients, we may be the only person they see all day.
Community lunch clubs and group meals – We provide meals to community groups and lunch clubs, bringing people together to share good food and good company. These clubs are vital in helping older adults maintain social connections and feel part of their local community.
Home-based support for older people – In Hertfordshire our pop-in visits, Active Ageing, and Nutrition teams regularly visit people at home to provide personalised support. From mobility exercises to tailored diet advice, they also bring warmth, encouragement, and someone to talk to.
Advocacy for older people – We help people have their voices heard when making important decisions. Our advocates support those who may feel overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure where to turn – ensuring no one is left to navigate challenges alone.
HILS Community Hubs – Based in Hertfordshire, our Hubs are a welcoming space for social activities, friendship, and support. It’s a place where older people can reconnect and enjoy a sense of belonging.
Tackling Loneliness at home – We understand that aging at home can come with emotional as well as practical challenges. That’s why our services aim to offer both: support for independent living, and real, human connection that reduces the risk of loneliness and isolation.
