Meet Fiona – stepping out for HILS!

Meet Fiona from the HILS Communications Team – she’s taking on a huge challenge to help raise awareness and much needed funds for our services. This autumn, Fiona and her partner Stephen will be walking 26 miles along The Test Way in Hampshire, fundraising to support older and vulnerable people across Hertfordshire, Hampshire and West Sussex.

In the run-up to the big day, Fiona is sharing her training journey through a series of blog posts – from early morning walks to sore feet and small victories. Whether you’re looking for Hampshire walking inspiration, love a good charity story, or want to learn more about the work of HILS and our meals on wheels service, follow along and support her every step of the way!

“Me and Stephen were joined on our walk by Ash the black Labrador who has become our personal trainer in our training for walking 26miles in September along the Test Way to raise money for HILS. We started our training with a shorter distance walk of 8 miles in Mottisfont on the outskirts of Romsey, Hampshire.

The weather was excellent for a country stroll, and we could take in views of Mottisfont abbey, walk in harvested fields with roly poly straw bales and woodlands. We even encountered part of the test way path we would be taking on in September so could get a feel of part of what the walk would entail. The walk was a nice starting point for our training as it is mostly flat and is easy to navigate round. Also it is a very popular walk for locals in area as it a perfect circular walk with a variety of landscapes to admire in the Hampshire countryside .

Ash took his role as our personal trainer very seriously and reminded us to drink plenty of water on route to keep well hydrated. He encouraged us on our walk and most importantly for him making sure we stopped for lunch to refuel. He also enjoyed a swim in the River Dunn to cool down after a long stroll and was maybe rewarded with a treat or two.”
