Our Director of Resources, Phil Martin, is taking on a long‑distance walking challenge to raise money and awareness in support of our services and the people who rely on them.

The challenge will test both physical and mental endurance, with Phil committing months of training to prepare for the miles ahead. Alongside his day‑to‑day role, he’s been steadily building up distance through regular long walks, early starts and weekend training routes across Hertfordshire.

With not long to go until the main event, Phil has now entered the final stages of preparation. Below, he shares his latest training update as he begins to taper his mileage and focus on getting everything ready for the big day.

Phil’s latest training update

Update written by Phil Martin

Only about a week or so to go now, and I’m head‑long into the final stages of training.

Over Easter I completed my longest training walk so far – 38km – taking in a big loop around the north of Hertfordshire, making the most of countryside footpaths through fields and woodlands. It was tough going in places but really encouraging to know the miles are in my legs now.

I’m starting to taper down the distances over the next few days and focusing on getting everything ready for the main event – from blister plasters and a headtorch to sun cream (hopefully needed rather than just packed!).

A huge thank you to everyone for your encouragement and support so far – it genuinely makes a difference.

If you haven’t already, I’d really appreciate it if you could share my JustGiving page with friends and family or give it a final boost as we head towards the start line.

Thanks again – not long now!
