Community Comes Together for Basingstoke Older Persons Information Day
Fiona our Communication and Marketing Officer in Hampshire recently attended the “Basingstoke Older Persons Information Day” which was held at Church Cottage, opposite Festival Place, on Tuesday 7th October.
Organised by the local charity Basingstoke NeighbourCare, the event was dedicated to supporting older residents and their carers by showcasing a wide range of services, activities, and support groups available in the area.
Basingstoke NeighbourCare offer a wide range of services from befriending and gardening services to weekly community cafés, and more. Their mission is to help older individuals maintain independence and reduce social isolation.
There was a great turnout from the community, with attendees engaging with stallholders and gathering valuable information about local resources. A highlight of the day was the visit from Mayor of Basingstoke, Councillor Colin Phillimore, who officially opened the event and praised the dedication of local organisations.
“It’s lovely to see so many stalls here,” said Cllr Phillimore. “Thank you for all your hard work. Without your support, many people in Basingstoke might struggle to get the help they need.”
The mayor took a keen interest in HILS’ offerings, exploring the nutritious menu and learning how the service enables people to remain in their homes longer.
“I knew very little about meals on wheels,” Cllr Phillimore admitted. “It’s wonderful to see HILS helping people stay healthy at home. A hot, nutritious meal and a wellbeing check can make a huge difference and offer peace of mind.”
The event showed the importance of community collaboration in supporting older residents and highlighted the wealth of resources available to help support residents.
