Welcome back to our ‘A Day in the Life’ series, where we chat to HILS team members to see what they get up to in a typical day and the impact their efforts have on clients across our services.
This month we are looking at our Fleet and Facilities department and all the essential work they do to keep our service running smoothly. Meet Jamie…….
I first joined HILS back in 2019 as a Community Team Member, working as a Community Team Member. It was the perfect role at the time—rewarding work that allowed me to pursue my education while making a real difference. From there, I moved into the Stock Controller position at our Letchworth site, where I managed the ordering and maintenance of our perishable stock.
After wrapping up my time in that role in May 2024, I took some time off for an unforgettable summer, travelling to 13 different countries across Europe. But in early 2025, I found myself right back at HILS—this time as a Fleet and Facilities Coordinator.
What Does the Fleet and Facilities Team Do?
At HILS, our Facilities team is responsible for keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes—building operations, maintenance, security, cleaning, health and safety, repairs, renovations, and contract management. It’s a busy role, often requiring quick thinking and reactive problem-solving to keep things moving forward. But with the recent separation of the Facilities and Fleet departments, we’re now working towards a more proactive approach, focusing on long-term improvements to building maintenance and health & safety.
Managing a Growing Fleet of Vehicles
With our fleet of vehicles growing bigger each year, managing it comes with its fair share of challenges. Our delivery vehicles are on the road every day, covering significant mileage compared to private cars. This means a higher chance of wear and tear, breakdowns, and mechanical issues. Keeping on top of vehicle maintenance is crucial—we make sure all fleet paperwork is up to date, service plans are followed, and any necessary repairs are carried out quickly to keep our drivers safe and our meals on wheels deliveries on schedule.
Why I Love This Role
As Fleet and Facilities Coordinator, no two days are the same. I work directly under our Fleet and Facilities Team Leaders, which means my tasks and projects vary week to week. The variety is what drew me to the role in the first place—there’s always something new to tackle! On top of that, working under two fantastic team leaders makes for a really enjoyable and supportive work environment.
From my first day at HILS to now, my journey has been full of learning experiences, new challenges, and rewarding moments. I’m looking forward to seeing how our Fleet and Facilities team continues to grow and improve the services we provide—one well-maintained building and roadworthy vehicle at a time!
